UNITED NATIONS – The United Nations Security Council held an emergency meeting Monday to address recent U.S. military strikes in Venezuela and the capture of President Nicolás Maduro.

In a statement read by a U.N. official, Secretary-General António Guterres said he is deeply concerned about escalating instability, the regional impact and the precedent such actions could set.

The U.N. says Venezuela has called the U.S. operation a violation of the U.N. charter.

Guterres urged dialogue inside Venezuela and called on the international community to act in the interest of peace.
