NEW YORK – The United Nations is sounding the alarm over what it calls an “extremely worrying” human rights crisis in Haiti.

From April to June alone, more than 1,500 people were killed and over 600 injured in gang violence, most of it in the capital, Port-Au-Prince. Kidnappings, sexual violence, and forced displacement are also on the rise.

The U.N. is urging more international support, especially for a multinational security mission and efforts to stop illegal arms trafficking.

Nearly 240,000 people are now displaced, as aid agencies warn of severe funding shortages.
