UNITED STATES – There’s good news at American grocery stores as egg prices are finally cracking.

U.S. retail egg prices dropped in April to $5.12 a dozen, down from a record $6.23 in March.

That’s the biggest monthly dip since 1984, according to new government data.

However prices are still nearly 80% higher than a year ago, largely due to a deadly Bird Flu outbreak that’s wiped out over 169 million birds.

The U.S. is now importing more eggs and investing $1 billion to boost farm biosecurity.

Meanwhile the Justice Department says it’s investigating top producer Cal-Maine Foods for possible price manipulation.
