UNITED STATES – In a rare bi-partisan move U.S. congressional democrats and republicans announced legislation to help address Haiti’s worsening humanitarian and security crisis.

The legislation punishes Haiti’s political elites found colluding with criminal gangs.

The Haiti Criminal Collusion Transparency Act requires the U.S. state department to investigate the relationship between gangs and elites.

Punishment could include sanctions for human rights violations and visa restrictions for gang leaders and their supporters.

Chairman of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee Senator Bob Menendez said in a
statement it is time for both Haiti’s gangs and their financers and political backers to face more consequences.
