UNITED STATES – The U.S. Department of Transportation warned mass flight delays and cancelations if the government shutdown continues into next week.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy saying parts of the national airspace may be forced to close due to staff shortages.

Nearly half of all major air traffic control facilities are understaffed – 13,000 controllers are working without pay and many in the New York area have called out.

Duffy said air traffic controllers need support and paychecks to keep the skies safe. He promised delays and cancelations will occur rather than risk safety.

He warned lawmakers, “If you bring us to a week from today, you will see mass chaos.”
