UNITED NATIONS – The United Nations general assembly has voted for Palestines to be accepted as a member.

Its current non-member observer state status since 2012, allows some rights short of a full member.

The vote by the 193-member general assembly was a global survey of support for the Palestinian bid to become a full member.

However, membership can only be decided upon by the UN security council.

The news comes as several European countries are reportedly planning to recognise a Palestinian state.

Last month, the US vetoed a widely backed Algerian resolution seeking Palestine’s admittance as a state.
