NICARAGUA – The United Nations human rights office reported a sharp decline in human rights conditions in Nicaragua over the past year, with a rise in arbitrary detentions, political intimidation, and attacks on indigenous peoples.

The report, based on 120 interviews, covers the period from June 2023 to May 2024, documenting widespread violations, including enforced disappearances and the erosion of freedoms such as expression and assembly.

The Nicaraguan government, under President Daniel Ortega, has intensified its crackdown on civil society, shutting down over 1,700 organizations in august alone, prompting urgent calls for international intervention.
