NASSAU , BAHAMAS – From sniffing out drugs to taking down suspects, the four-legged officers of the Royal Bahamas Police Force’s K-9 unit have been helping put criminals behind bars for decades.

Our Jasmin Brown recently visited the unit where she got to see them in action.

5-year-old K-9 officer Niko, showed us just how he got his no-nonsense reputation.

One of ten dogs in the unit, he’s highly trained and ready to handle just about every situation.

While they may fall under the internal security division like the SWAT team, the K-9 unit definitely stands out.

Officer in charge of the K-9 unit Assistant Superintendent, Marco Hanna, said their dedicated dogs play a critical role along with their human handlers.

They’re are trained to detect explosives, locate missing people, recover evidence, protect officers, attack suspects who flee from officers, and to sniff out illegal drugs.

When they’re not fighting crime or on duty, these canine officers are relaxing in their kennels or hanging out with their handlers.

At a moment’s notice, they’re ready to spring into action, which proves that man’s best friend can also be a criminal’s worst enemy.
