CAT ISLAND , BAHAMAS – The Davis administration highlighted what it called a major milestone on Cat Island on Friday.

In 2022, the government launched its Family Island Airport Renaissance Project, a $500 million initiative aimed at upgrading airports across the country.

Since then, projects have been completed in Mayaguana, Ragged Island, and Great Harbour Cay, with Cat Island now added to the list.

“Moments ago, we landed on Cat Island for the commissioning of the Arthur’s Town Airport.”

The event was attended by dignitaries, invited guests, and government officials.

The $9.5 million upgrade is part of the Davis administration’s broader effort to modernize airports nationwide and drive economic growth.

During the ceremony, Minister of Tourism, Investments and Aviation Chester Cooper described the project as a lasting legacy.

He also made this announcement.

“You will see your first international service landing here every Tuesday and every Thursday. Maker’s Air will land here directly from Florida on May 12.”

Prime Minister Philip Davis closed out the program, commending those involved in the project and encouraging residents to take advantage of the opportunities it will bring.

Philip Davis KC – Prime Minister

“I know too well that our people on Cat Island choose to live here for all sorts of reasons. Important among them are the sense of community, peace, and neighbourliness. Yes, the opening of this airport will bring more people, more trade, and more opportunity, but it is up to you, the people of Cat Island, to determine how you wish to expand that community, how you wish to share that tranquillity, and how you wish to seize those opportunities.”

Following the ceremony, the prime minister said the redevelopment of the Arthur’s Town Airport is about building a foundation for future generations.

Philip Davis KC – Prime Minister

“All that I’m looking forward to is that a good foundation is laid for the future. This is about the future, so my grandkids can be here to enjoy what I left behind.”
