UNITED STATES – The United States government announced new sanctions against Cuba’s state-owned oil and gas company, Unión Cuba-Petróleo (CUPET), deepening economic pressure on Havana amid the country’s ongoing energy crisis.

The decision was announced by the U.S. State Department and the Treasury Department.

The sanctions include the freezing of assets under U.S. jurisdiction and restrictions on conducting transactions with the company.

Washington maintains that CUPET manages assets expropriated from U.S. citizens after the Cuban Revolution and accuses the Cuban government of using energy resources to sustain security structures and political control.
