VATICAN – Pope Francis remains in hospital amid serious respiratory issues.

The Vatican says Pope Francis suffered two episodes of acute respiratory insufficiency on Monday as he continues to battle double pneumonia in hospital.

He was admitted to hospital on February 14th with a severe respiratory infection that led to other complications.

Doctors performed two procedures to assess his air passages after he suffered an event similar to an asthma attack.

The 87-year-old Pontiff has been receiving non-invasive mechanical ventilation to aid his breathing.

His prognosis remains guarded, meaning he is not yet out of danger.
