NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Friday night began as a joyful family celebration but ended in tragedy for the family of 72-year-old Vernencha Butler.

Police Commissioner Clayton Fernander telling reporters the grandmother was found dead hours after being dropped home by family members around 11 p.m.

By 3am her son and grandson returned home to meet a horrifying discovery.

“As they entered the bedroom is facing directly opposite, the front door and that bedroom door was open so they were able to see directly into the room as they entered the apartment,” the police commissioner said.

“And they noticed their mother was lying in the nude on the floor, appeared to be unresponsive. They also discovered a male who was also in the nude on, sitting on the bed.”

Despite the tragic events police have not classified the case as a homicide.

Fernander says there were no signs of visible injury on the 72-year-old’s body. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.

Meantime police say the suspect, a 25-year-old man from the same area, entered the home through a living room window.

And it turns out the suspect is known to the police and had just been released from prison in march. Fernander says he had previously  been arrested for vagrancy and stealing.

The police commissioner says surveillance footage retrieved from a nearby business showed the suspect loitering outside earlier that night and appearing to use drugs.

According to the top cop, the suspect is expected to be formally charged before the end of the week.
