UNITED STATES – Walgreens plans to close a significant number of its 8,600 U.S. stores as part of a multiyear optimization program.

Ceo Tim Wentworth announced Thursday that approximately 25% of stores are not profitable, and significant closures will focus on these underperforming locations.

The closures, aimed at addressing an unsustainable pharmacy model, will occur over the next three years.

The company also cut its full-year profit outlook due to ongoing economic pressures and inflation.
