PANAMA – A U.S. warship has docked at the Panama Canal, part of a bigger military buildup in the southern Caribbean.

Washington says the move is aimed at cracking down on Latin American drug cartels, but critics aren’t so sure.

Seven U.S. warships and a nuclear-powered submarine are being deployed, bringing more than 4,500 sailors and marines.

The Trump Administration insists the focus is drug trafficking, though much of the trade actually flows through the pacific or by air.

Venezuelan officials argue their government may be the real target, accusing washington of threatening the country in violation of international treaties.
