NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A stark ultimatum Wednesday morning from president of The Bahamas Electrical Workers Union, Kyle Wilson, for government to meet with the union or face industrial action.

Wilson says his members are concerned about recent energy reform plans that could reshape operations at the power company.

Wilson says he attempted to back in June. Energy and Transport Minister Jobeth Coleby-Davis revealed plans that would reform the country’s energy sector and a partnership with local company Island Grid.

She also assured BPL workers the partnerships would not lead to layoffs, insisting the existing industrial agreements would not be impacted.

However, Wilson says otherwise, making this claim:

It’s what’s signaling the potential shutdown, as Wilson says questions over BPL’s future and the livelihoods of its workforce hang in the balance.

The potential implications of this standoff between the BEWU and government are significant.

Wilson hinted the union may consider further steps if its demands for dialogue and meaningful consultation continue to be ignored.
