“We Will Be Here Every Day Until The Accreditors Leave”

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Line staff at the University of The Bahamas staged a loud protest Monday morning, demanding action on what they say is a two-year overdue salary review and long-ignored workplace concerns.

Their demonstration coincided with a scheduled visit from international accreditors, a timing The Bahamas Public Services Union says was intentional.

Chants filled the air as staff gathered on University Drive, calling for UB executives to address the unresolved industrial agreement signed in 2023. That agreement included a salary review and pay increases that union leaders say have not been honored.

BPSU President Kimsley Ferguson said the institution is not treating its workers in a way that reflects international standards.

He added that while UB aims to impress accreditors, employees continue to work in deteriorating conditions.

At one point, tensions rose when protestors attempted to block the pathway of accreditors traveling by golf cart. UB’s head of security, retired Assistant Commissioner of Police Solomon Cash, stepped in as the crowd surged toward the library entrance, where accreditors were escorted inside. Staff members followed but were stopped by security as doors were locked.

Ferguson criticized UB leadership for avoiding the workers.

Beyond salary concerns, staff say the physical conditions on campus are unacceptable. Administrative assistant Latoya Johnson described mold, termites and a shortage of basic supplies like garbage bags, toilet paper and functioning sanitizers.

A full investigation into staff concerns has not been announced, and UB officials have not publicly responded to Monday’s demonstration.
