SOUTH ELEUTHERA, BAHAMAS – Students at the Wemyss Bight Primary School in South Eleuthera now have a brand new playground, it was a very special gift from Disney Cruise Line.

Officials say it’s also just one of many community projects on tap for the island.

After a long day’s work at school, students at the Wemyss Bight Primary got to play on their brand new playground on Friday.

Disney Cruise Line that’s made it possible.

Back when the destination opened at Lighthouse Cay last year, the company made a commitment to invest in the local community.

Officials say this new play space is a part of that push.

Regional Public Affairs Director Joey Gaskins, says it’s all about creating positive impacts in a community they now call home.

“We have focused on culture through our sponsorship of Junior Junkanoo for example on conservation, our work at Lookout Cay, sustainable economic opportunities, our work with the Chamber of Commerce. But also community, strengthening communities in the best way we know how starting with the young people in these communities,” Gaskins said.

It’s a small school with less than 100 students tucked away in one of the island’s southern communities.

It took a team of volunteers from the community and Disney to make it possible.

Principal Katrina McKinney, says it was more than a project for them.

“This has made a significant impact in our school community. Therefore, on behalf of our parents and community, we feel truly blessed and grateful for all that you have done,” McKinney said.

And of course it was all about the students.

A few students were asked how they felt about their brand new playground.

J’mari Kemp said, “This is our first playground in a very long time so I’m really excited to have a new playground so I can play with my friend.”

Another student Ramona Miller says, “I feel great about it. It’s a good experience for the children because the children have an opportunity to feel free on top of the greatness of recreation.”
