NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Severe weather caused widespread flooding on several islands including Grand Bahama and Bimini where Grand Bahama Minister Ginger Moxey says at least 140 homes sustained water damage. With the wet weather expected to continue over the next few days, the works minister says they have activated flood mitigation measures.

Jasmin Brown reports.

The Grand Bahama Minister says that number is only based on their initial assessments, which she says was conducted following a weekend filled with almost non-stop heavy rain.

She says what made it even worse was that many of the homes that sustained water damage were ones that had not been fully repaired after hurricane Dorian.

Moxey adds, the situation is so bad in Grand Bahama that she planned on making a case in Cabinet on Tuesday to get immediate access to funds to assist with the situation.

Over the weekend, officials reported that Grand Bahama alone saw some 10.6 inches of rainfall, with remnants of that impact spilling over to the capital and causing flooding in some areas.

Public Works Minister Alfred Sears says several mitigation measures are now in play and long-term solutions are on the way.

Sears says he will detail other measures to deal with flooding when he delivers his contribution to the budget debate in Parliament later this month.
