NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A Bahamian woman serving seven years for blinding and disfiguring her romantic rival in an acid attack has lost a bid to have the sentence reduced.

Sixty-six-year-old Pandora McKenzie received the maximum sentence after she was convicted in 2024 of causing dangerous harm to Stephanie Braynen.

The Court heard that McKenzie carried out the planned attack on November 2, 2020 after luring Braynen to her Grand Bahama home.

McKenzie’s husband, Edward Deveaux, had invited Braynen to the house in hopes of convincing his wife that they were not having an affair.

But during the discussion, McKenzie threw acid in Braynen’s face before getting a cutlass.
Deveaux tackled and disarmed his wife before she used the cutlass.

McKenzie’s lawyer Bjorn Ferguson argued that the sentence was excessive since it was McKenzie’s first conviction.

But the Court of Appeal ruled that the stiff sentence was supported by the evidence, as maximum sentences are appropriate for the “most serious incidents.”
