NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Summer repairs at the R.M. Bailey Sr. High School grabbed the national spotlight earlier this month after “truss issues” caused the collapse of a roof.

The story captured headlines in the country after a video circulated showing the aftermath of what appeared to be the collapse of an under-construction roof, the news sending social media into a frenzy.

Minister of Works and Utilities Alfred Sears refuting those claims and says it was the trusses of the roof that collapsed.

The Ministry of Works released a statement on Friday acknowledging that the “lunch pavilion roof” at the school collapsed on August 9.

The statement said employees of the general contractor “either in an effort to take down some of the members or adjust the members, removed some of the bracing making the system unstable and causing a collapse of the trusses.”

Prime Minister Philip Davis also weighing in on the situation saying some of the information shared is untrue adding that the contractor admitted that it was one of his employees who removed a brace.
