$14M Invested in Young Bahamians’ Education

NASSAU , BAHAMAS – St. Augustine’s College graduate Jayden Sands is the 2026 All-Bahamas Merit Scholar.

The distinction is awarded to the Bahamian student deemed most outstanding academically and socially from a field of high-performing applicants.

Sands is now studying accounting and finance at St. John’s University in Minnesota.

He says being selected came as a surprise, especially given the strength of the competition.

“Due to that, there were many other well-established and intelligent applicants who were also going for the scholarship, and the fact that I was the one who would end up being awarded it, I was really appreciative.”

The scholarship provides 35-thousand dollars a year for four years, covering a significant portion of Sands’ bachelor’s degree.

To qualify, students must have at least eight A’s in their BGCSE examinations, a minimum SAT score of 1220, a 3.75 GPA, and a record of community service and nation-building.

Education Minister Chester Cooper says the scholarship plays a much bigger role, supporting not only students’ education, but also their future contributions to the country.

“Government-funded scholarships are more than awards for academic achievement. They are strategic investments in the human capital of our country.”

Queen’s College graduate Gary Neilly was named first runner-up and will receive 25-thousand dollars annually.

Meanwhile, 27 other National Merit Scholars will receive 20-thousand dollars each year.

Cooper says the government has budgeted 14 million dollars for scholarships this year and approved 500 new scholarships worth an additional five million dollars.

He says the ministry is also looking to expand international educational opportunities for Bahamian students.

“For example, we are speaking with a potential Bahamian ambassador in the Middle East to explore partnerships there, as we also do likewise in Central and South America.”

And as these scholars prepare to take their education beyond The Bahamas, Cooper says the hope is that their success will eventually come full circle, with their knowledge and experience helping to build a stronger Bahamas.
