NASSAU, BAHAMAS – An attempted drug smuggling operation was thwarted Sunday morning when police found a sailboat near Long Island with 24 kilos of cocaine.

The drugs were transported to New Providence last night.

A joint operation between local and international law enforcement agencies led officers to a $500,000 drug find.

Police Press Liaison Officer Asp Audley Peters said officers came across a sailboat in waters near Long Island, early Sunday morning.

According to Peters, officers were unable to conduct a thorough search at that time.

As a result, the vessel was towed to Exuma.

The men are believed to be between the age of 37 and 56 and are Venezuelan and Dominican nationals.

They were arrested and a second search conducted on Monday.

Peters said police are doing their part to put a major dent in the reduction of drugs coming in country.
