61-Year-Old Haitian Man Charged In Fatal Crash That Killed Traffic Cop

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A 61-year-old Haitian national is behind bars after he was accused of a fatal crash that claimed the life of Corporal Steven Duncombe.

Jesucoeur Alcy was denied bail on a vehicular manslaughter charge after Acting Chief Magistrate Ancella Evans determined he was a potential flight risk, as he only holds a work permit that expires in December.

Prosecutors say on September 12 at around 1:45 pm on Prince Charles drive, Duncombe, a police motorcyclist, was providing an escort for the funeral of a fallen colleague when he was struck by a car driven by Alcy.

Duncombe died of his injuries on September 14.

Alcy, who does not speak English fluently, was read the charges in creole by an interpreter.

He did not have to enter a plea and returns to court on November 26 to receive voluntary bill of indictment papers.

Duncombe’s distraught relatives and work colleagues, including the commanding officer of the traffic division, Chief Superintendent Sybrina Porter, were present in court.

Alcy is represented by Benjamin Mckinney, while inspector Deon Barr is the prosecutor.
