BPL Union: What Will Happen To Our Workers?

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Despite assurances made by Prime Minister Philip Davis that Bahamas Power and Light workers’ jobs are safe, executives of the Bahamas Electrical Utility Managerial Union say they’re still worried over their future at the power company.

Union President Christopher Hanna says he does not have a problem with the government’s 25-year agreement with pike corporation.

He said now the union will be able to see wxactly what the deal is.

The arrangement is being facilitated through its Bahamian management company, Island Grid Solutions, to upgrade and manage BPL’s transmission and distribution network.

The union president expressed uncertainty for their 120 members.

Hanna said he reached out to Energy Minister Jobeth Colbey-Davis for answers but left the conversation feeling even more perplexed.

Aside from the Pike deal, the union head says there are other outstanding matters that need to be addressed such as hazardous pay.

Taking all that into account, Hanna claims the morale of the staff is lacking.
