NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Hurricane Erin has been brushing the Southeastern islands of The Bahamas and The Turks and Caicos since early Monday morning.

The storm’s eye remains just a few hundred miles off the coast. Footage from Mayaguana’s Chief Councilor, Vincent Murphy, shows heavy rainfall causing localized flooding, including at a designated shelter at the island’s school. High waves have battered the local dock, and strong winds could be heard howling across the island.

Vincent Murphy – Chief Councilor, Mayaguana:
“Last night we had a power outage for about two hours. One of the settlements, Pirates Hill, is still without power. The BPL team says it will be restored as soon as the weather permits.”

Neighboring Grand Turk is experiencing the full force of tropical storm conditions, with waves slamming government docks and flooding roads, creating dangerous situations for motorists.

On Crooked Island, while rainfall was minimal, residents still felt heavy gusts and rough surf. Former Chief Councilor David Ferguson described conditions along the northern coast:
“The sea is very rough with a lot of surf out there.”

Meanwhile, San Salvador has seen calmer conditions with light rain and overcast skies. Southern islanders, however, had prepared for the worst.

Vincent Murphy – Chief Councilor, Mayaguana:
“Shelters were already up and running just in case of emergency.”
