LONG ISLAND, BAHAMAS – The Long Island Library and Museum may be one of Long Island’s best kept secrets for fans of history.

Located in Buckleys, Long Island, the museum falls under the Antiquities Monuments and Museums Corporation and houses pieces dating back over 500 years and walks visitors through the realities of life on the island over the years like the fact that much of the island didn’t get electricity until the late 20th century.

But the museum’s pieces don’t stop at the history of the current inhabitants of Long Island, they also cover pre-Columbian life.

And this replica of what’s believed to be  Lucayan remains, was found on Lowes Beach after Hurricane Joaquin.

Assistant Site Manager Natasha Knowles says one of their main challenges has been exposure.

And we’re told the museum isn’t just for international travelers, they hope domestic tourists and especially the Long Island diaspora can enjoy their exhibits as Cartwright says, it wouldn’t have been possible without them.
