NASSAU, BAHAMAS – It’s a controversial issue that many government ministers are still tightlipped about. Abortion remains illegal in The Bahamas in all cases except to save a mother’s life.

Social Services Minister Obie Wilchcombe telling reporters last week he believes the door has now opened for discussion on the issue.

Today, Minister of State for Social Services and Urban Development, Lisa Rahming says she agrees.

The most recent debate was sparked after news broke that an 11-year-old girl’s mother was charged with giving her abortion pills after she was allegedly sexually assaulted by the mom’s boyfriend.

Wilchcombe told reporters last week it is wrong to force a raped person to give birth to a child.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Philip Davis had conflicting views on abortion calling it both a medical matter and a personal choice

While Rahming declined to comment on that particular issue, she had this to say.

In recent weeks, other government ministers were also questioned on the issue.

While he declined to give his personal views. Health and Wellness Minister Dr. Michael Darville told reporters last week, the issue of abortion needs to come to the forefront, adding that he supports the fact that an open discussion is necessary.

Attorney General Ryan Pinder also declined to give his views on the matter, noting that he’s a creature of instruction, and only adding that once those conversations have happened and there is a recommendation of government, he will affect whatever that recommendation is.
