ABACO, BAHAMAS – The community center and hurricane shelter proposed by the former administration were described as inadequate, according to Disaster Reconstruction Authority Chairman Alex Storr.

The project, which broke ground in May 2021, had a $1.8 million price tag with a capacity of 800 people.

However, Storr doesn’t seem to think the current building can handle those numbers.

The delegation led by Acting Prime Minister Chester Cooper visited the site in Central Pines in Abaco Thursday.

Back in May 2021, the Minnis administration revealed that a partnership with the DRA, Bahamas Hope Foundation, Sol Relief, and Ernst and Young would build the center.

Storr says the new plan is for a contract to be issued in early December, with a completion date of summer 2023.
