ABACO, BAHAMAS – District Superintendent of Education Dominique Russell rode out hurricane Dorian with her husband, dog and a fellow teacher.

She recalls the chaos that she says started bright and early

As the eye passed over the island she says they made a decision to leave.

Russell eventually ended up at the government complex, which housed offices for the Ministry of Education.

Russell’s home was demolished during the storm and she eventually evacuated the island. However, she says her focus was always on her team.

Russell says she returned to Abaco shortly after and lived in a trailer for some two years.

Her motivation, to help rebuild the education system on that island and now some three years later, Russell says she believes she’s grown not only as a professional but as a person.

The Grand Bahama native says she is proud of the efforts made on both islands, and is particularly proud of how Abaconians have pulled together.
