NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Just days into the crawfish season, and already fishermen are seeing a large and steady catch.

Denielle Miller
“It feels great to see this tail on my plate again as hundreds of fishermen head out to sea. I know they’re more excited than me for open season.”

I came across these Fox Town fishermen packaging their first catch of the season: spiny lobster, or what we call crawfish.

Fisherman Dwayne Russell confirmed over a thousand pounds of crawfish were caught, only two days into the season.

Russell says a catch of this magnitude takes more than skill. It’s also about careful organization with little room for errors or negligence.

Dwayne Russell – Fisherman
“We go out, we make sure that all the condos, aka traps, are ready and also make sure all the boats are prepared, proper gearing and everything. Make sure they’re registered. Make sure you get your compressor license because you don’t want to get locked up out there.”

As the season was preparing to open, Minister of Agriculture and Marine Resources Jomo Campbell publicly boasted about last season’s success.

While Russell agrees, there are some pricing concerns.

Dwayne Russell – Fisherman
“We had a lot of lobsters around, the price was okay. We were satisfied at ten dollars, but the price was better before that—twenty dollars, twenty-one dollars. That was awesome. We need to get it back there.”

Of course, we had to ask: Where’s the best place for “crawfishing?”

Dwayne Russell – Fisherman
“I think we have more working grounds in the islands because we have a lot of cays, a lot of reefs, a lot of bars and different stuff.”
