Abaco MP Questioned and Released by Police

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The saga continues as the MP for North Abaco Kirk Cornish has been released from police custody.

The Our News team finding out the information while on the ground in Grand Bahama Friday when they visited the Central Police Station only to learn that he was no longer there. 

Member of Parliament for North Abaco, 48-year-old Kirk Cornish accompanied by his attorney, turned himself into police in Grand Bahama on Thursday afternoon for questioning on a rape allegations.

But less than 24 hours later, Our News understood that cornish had been released from custody. 

We also spoke to North Abaco MP’s Attorney Owen Wells who declined to comment on the situation which he says is out of respect for the police investigation, Kirk Cornish and a woman who is involved in the case.

While Wells remained silent Grand Bahama residents expressed their views.

Gloria Williams says she was surprised when she first heard about the allegations and believes that the MP should step down given the circumstances.

But as it turns out an MP does not have to resign from the House of Assembly even if he or she is questioned by police or charged before the before the court.

Under Article 48 (1)(f) of the Constitution, a seat would become vacant if an MP is convicted of a crime and sentenced for a period exceeding 12 months.

Still, it is unknown if Cornish will be charged with a crime.

Following news that the Abaco MP was released we attempted to reach out to him but our calls were not answered.

Cornish is a freshman MP and was voted into office after running as a Progressive Liberal Party MP for the North Abaco seat.

He also currently serves as parliamentary secretary in the Office of the Prime Minister.

The North Abaco MP has a “Grill and Shill” in Green Turtle Cay, Abaco, planned for Saturday.
