ABACO, BAHAMAS – Heavy rain and gusty winds from Tropical Storm Imelda left parts of Abaco under water overnight.

Residents are voicing frustration, this as shelters continue to fill with hundreds of people deciding not to ride out the storm at home.

In Dundas Town, Abaco, across from the Credit Union Plaza, floodwaters were nearly a foot deep. Residents here say this is a regular occurrence whenever there’s a storm.

Judith Nesbitt has been living in the community for over a year, and today she had to wade through water, just to get to her front door.

As waters rose, more residents turned to the shelter at Central Abaco Primary School, by this afternoon, the number climbed to almost 150.

According to shelter manager Glender Archer-Knowles, one of them was a minor without his guardians.

Island Administrator Kenwood Cartwright says there’ve been no storm-related injuries reported and while the storm’s strongest winds have already passed, the island is not in the clear just yet.
