Air Arrivals in Exuma Up 2% Despite Sandals Closure

EXUMA, BAHAMAS – Residents and business owners in Exuma can expect an increase in airlift to the island, according to Deputy Prime Minister Chester Cooper. Cooper, who also serves as minister for tourism, investments, and aviation, said despite challenges, thousands of rooms are available for potential visitors.

The deputy prime minister’s comments came during the island’s annual Business Outlook. He told attendees that airlines recognize Exuma as an ideal destination for family travel.

“I am pleased to announce that when we look at the number of seats coming to Exuma for the upcoming season, we are overall 2% ahead of where we were last year in terms of capacity.”

Cooper acknowledged the importance of airlift given the temporary closure of one of the island’s premier resorts, Sandals. He noted that major airlines have not only maintained seat capacity but also increased it.

“Delta Airlines is up 10% in capacity with its daily flights from Atlanta. American Airlines continues its twice-daily flights from Miami and once-a-week flight from Charlotte. In January, they’ll operate six times a week. Air Canada continues its once-a-week flight from Toronto, and Silver Airways maintains its weekly flight from Fort Lauderdale.”

Cooper also provided an update on the airport redevelopment project in Georgetown, Exuma. While the runway must be completed first, the terminal construction will follow soon after.

“We have the funding already lined up with the Saudi fund for redevelopment. They are ticking their boxes, and once they finish, they’ll release the money to us.”
