NASSAU , BAHAMAS – Reaching one’s 100th birthday represents a major achievement.

Last Saturday, Andros native Varlene Mackey Braynen accomplished this extraordinary milestone.

To commemorate the occasion, family and friends assembled at All Saints Anglican Church for an event they called “Celebrating a Century of Grace.”

Decked out in a fuchsia dress, a glittered birthday sash and a tiara, Mackey Braynen says she’s thankful to God for being able to mark a century on Earth.

“I thank Him for what happened, for the time He let me be on Earth. I thank Him for everything He done for me.”

The centenarian is a mother of six, and a grandmother and great-grandmother to many.

During a conversation with the Our News team, she says the love she demonstrates towards others is her secret to long life.

“I do plenty kindness for people. I attend to plenty sick people. I ain’t scorning nobody, and if I have the last, I’ll give it to people.”

It’s a testimony her son, Nathanial Braynen, confirms.

He says his mother taught him and his siblings the importance of manners, hard work and independence.

“With her, she always tried to lead you the right way, and she only had boys the first couple years, three boys the first couple years. And when you see the things I can do in my house right now, she taught you.”
