For many, it was a moment of excitement and national pride.
Prime Minister Philip Davis also took part in the celebrations, participating in a cricket game.
With Antigua and Barbuda is also hosting the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, there is an added sense of significance to this year’s independence celebrations.
The gathering has brought international attention to the island, with delegations from across the Commonwealth arriving for the four-day summit.
Meanwhile, even though independence celebrations have wrapped up, the Commonwealth meeting is continuing in Antigua on Monday, as delegates take part in the joint opening of the Commonwealth forums.
