NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Commissioner of Police Clayton Fernander says armed robberies are up by 49 percent.

While he says police are determined to clamp down on crime, he is also encouraging residents and business owners to remain vigilant.

“I see some individuals will pull up to the ATM machine at nighttime,” Fernander explains.

“That two seconds could cost you your life. Leave that couple dollars until the next morning. Don’t do that.”

A similar warning going to business owners.

“I see business establishments – you have security officers. They have a role to play, not to pack grocery. Their role is to ensure you are safe and your customers are safe.”

If you’re making a bank deposit at night, the police chief says you should call your area commander to meet you at the bank.

“If somebody comes and they hold you up… let them take what they want. It’s better to let that go than to lose your life,” Fernander adds.
