NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A mother whose four-year-old daughter was murdered by her live-in boyfriend has been jailed for three years.

Ostonya Walker pleaded guilty to child cruelty and exposing D’onya Bella Walker to grievous harm on January 16, 2023 and was remanded to prison, pending sentencing.

The pre-schooler was murdered on November 5, 2021 by Darion Smith while her mother was at work.

He pleaded guilty to her murder and was sentenced to 25 years as part of a plea deal. Walker was sentenced to three years for child cruelty and two years for exposing a child to grievous harm when she appeared before Justice Renae McKay.

The sentences will be served at the same time.

Walker will also receive credit for the time she spent on remand.

Prosecutors had sought a jail term of five years’ imprisonment while Public Defender Dorsey McPhee recommended an absolute discharge.

While awaiting sentencing, Walker gave birth to her third child.
