NASSAU, BAHAMAS – As crime continues to surge in Haiti causing a humanitarian crisis, Bahamian officials say they are on high alert. 

Haiti’s economic and social issues have worsened since the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse in July 2021. Non-stop violence continues to destabilize the country as gangs commit violent crimes.

Caricom member states have taken notice.

Press Secretary Clint Watson says the Davis administration is leading a council with Caricom to figure out what the region needs to do in response to Haiti.

United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres has proposed that countries under the U.N. umbrella send a rapid action force to assist Haiti’s police force remove a threat posed by armed gangs.
