NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The 50th CARIFTA Track and Field Championships got off to a wet start, but Team Bahamas represented on their home turf and did not disappoint fans.

The Thomas A. Robinson National Track and Field Stadium was buzzing with fans and supporters this morning, despite the rain, fans saw  many qualify in their respective heats.

Kaden Cartwright threw 64.07 meters in the u20 boys’ javelin – the unofficial result placed him nearly three meters ahead of his nearest competitor, Trinidad and Tobago’s Charles Dorian.

With that throw, Cartwright was the first Bahamian to strike gold in the competition, despite a strong field of competitors.

Terrell McCoy came into today’s competition hoping to smash records in the under 17 girls shot putt throw.

While she missed the mark, her performance secured the second medal of the day for team bahamas – a bronze.

Team Bahamas’ Carlos Brown now has one less obstacle between him and the medal stand as Jamaican national junior record holder Bouwahjgie Nkrumie pulled up with an injury after an explosive start in his u20 boys’ 100m heat.

He was a favourite in the 100 and 200-meter races coming in with a personal best of 9.99 seconds – the third junior sprinter in history to secure a sub-10 second time.

Now Team Bahamas will look to add more medals to their total medal count, with many athletes progressing from the heats to the semi-finals and hopefully on to the finals.
