Bahamian Trailblazer Seeks Florida Senate Seat

UNITED STATES – A wife, mother, former councilwoman, and now a candidate for Florida Senate District 34, Shannon Ighodaro was born and raised in the Montell Heights community of New Providence before relocating to the United States to attend Florida Memorial University.

Through mentorship, she developed a passion for community service, which led to her becoming the first Bahamian elected to office in the City of Miami Gardens.

It is an accomplishment she says she is extremely proud of.

After serving as a councilwoman in Miami Gardens, Ighodaro says she believes the time is right to take her public service to the next level.

Having worked closely with residents and their concerns on a daily basis, she says she understands the needs of the community.

“When the opportunity presented itself, I thought I would lend my voice. I thought I would lend my background. I’m a different type of politician because I have experience within the corporate sector, experience within the political sector, and a love for community, family, and service. I believe that qualifies me to step up to the plate and run for District 34.”

As for her priorities if elected:

“My priorities from day one would be to fight for affordable housing, make sure public safety remains a priority, and continue fighting on behalf of our seniors. I feel it’s very important that we recognize the contributions of seniors. They are the backbone of our communities. Family, seniors, small businesses, and economic development are all priorities. I will fight on behalf of our small businesses and make sure they get their fair share of resources from the tax dollars we all send to Tallahassee.”

Ighodaro believes representation matters.

As a woman seeking higher office, she encourages young women to pursue their goals fearlessly, saying there are no limits to what they can achieve.

She also believes everyone has a unique ability to serve their community.

“As an immigrant, I understand those unique needs. The cities I mentioned before, including Miami Gardens and North Miami Beach, need representation. If you don’t understand the unique struggles, challenges, and progress of a particular demographic, then you cannot truly speak to it. I know what it is to come to the United States. I know what it is to be educated. I know what it is to work and gain experience. Most importantly, I know what it is to give back.”

The election is scheduled for August 18, and Ighodaro is seeking the support of Bahamians and members of the diaspora throughout the district.
