Bahamians Set for NCAA Kickoff Weekend

U.S.A – NCAA Division I football is back on campuses across the United States and Bahamian players hope to play a pivotal role as their teams chase bowl eligibility. 

Akron Zips senior offensive lineman Amarie Archer, gets his season started tonight when the  Zips host the Wyoming Cowboys at Infocision Stadium in Ohio. 

Also tonight, Miami of Ohio true freshman defensive back Khory Moss begins his collegiate career when the Redhawks face the Wisconsin Badgers at camp Randall Stadium in Wisconsion. 

Freshman quarterback Graham Knowles and the Georgia Tech’ Yellow Jackets open the season Friday night on the  road against coach prime and the Colorado Buffaloes at Folsom Field at 8pm in the first-ever meeting between the two programs.

Then we get to Saturday and perhaps the Bahamian player with the best opportunity to have an Immediate impact on his program – Prince Strachan makes his debut for the USC Trojans.

The junior wideout and the Trojans will host Missouri State at 10:30pm local time at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. 

Strachan racked up 37 receptions for 578 yards and three touchdowns in two season at boise State. 

Junior defensive lineman Mazio Randall, will make his season debut with Florida A&M in the SWAC, after spending two years at Towson.

The Rattlers will face Howard in the Orange Blossom Classic, Saturday at 4pm at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.

Track & Field

Devynne Charlton was back on the circuit and back in the Wanda Diamond League.

The 60m hurdles world record holder continues her progression outdoors this season with her latest stop on the tour earlier today in Zurich, Switzerland.

Charlton ran a season’s best 12.52 seconds to finish seventh in the 100m hurdles.

Jamaica’s Ackera Nugent was first in 12.30 seconds, Switzerland’s Ditaji Kambundji was second in 12.40 seconds, and grace stark of the us was third in 12.44 seconds. 

Charlton has appeared in two previous stops on the Diamond League series this season – in June in Stockholm, Sweden she ran a previous season’s best 12.59 seconds and in July she ran 12.69 seconds in Monaco.

Baseball

Bahamian baseball players have been showing speed on the diamond as well.

In the AA Texas league, Sebastian Walcott has ignited the Frisco Roughriders’ lineup as they make that final push toward the postseason.

In game one of the current series against the San Antonio Missions, Walcott stolen home in the eighth inning to secure a 3-2 win for Frisco. 

In game two he went 3-4 at the plate, including a double, in his team’s 14-11 loss.

Walcott is hitting .244 for the season with 12 home-runs, 48 RBIs, 28 stolen bases, 61 runs and a .719 ops.

Up in the majors, it was a hitless night for Jazz Chisholm in the Yankees 11-2 route of the Washington Nationals on Wednesday, but he did update the 30-30 tracker.

In the process, he also tied his career high with his 23rd stolen base of the season.

With career highs in both categories, Chisholm is the first yankee since Curtis Granderson in 2011 to post more than 25 homers and 20 stolen bases.
