BANGLADESH – Bangladesh’s War Crimes Tribunal has sentenced ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to death in Absentia, finding her guilty of ordering a deadly crackdown on a student uprising last year.

Reuters reports the verdict comes ahead of February’s elections, after Hasina’s party was barred from running, and she fled to India in August.

The court also handed her a life sentence on other charges, with cheers breaking out as the ruling was read.

The decision can be appealed in the supreme court but officials fear the verdict could trigger new unrest.
