NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A recently formed teachers union signing its first industrial agreement today for its nearly 500 members. The agreement making way for salary increases, a retention plan and a better insurance package. Berthony McDermott has the story and says one union chief is calling it an historic day for the labour movement.

After four months of negotiations government and The Bahamas Educators Councilors and Allied Workers Union putting pen to paper, marking the completion of its first industrial agreement.

Upon signing Education Minister Glenys Hanna-Martin saying it’s all about the students, adding that teachers help to guarantee their futures.

One of the most contentious issues during the negotiation, was the attendance at parent-teacher meetings.

BECAWU President Sandra Major admits both sides were at odds over the issue, with the union arguing that teachers cannot be forced to attend those meetings passed 3:15PM.

Increased rental allowance, career paths for teachers, and the exploration of a teacher’s commission are all a part of the agreement, which Trade Union Congress President Obie Ferguson calls historic in the labour movement.
