NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The incident that unfolded at Bimini Primary School involving the alleged beating of several students by a police officer was “completely outside what was authorized”, according to Education Minister Glenys Hanna Martin.

Speaking to reporters, Wednesday morning, Hanna Martin explained the school principal is no longer there and she has been told the police officer has been transferred. The students, meanwhile, are undergoing counseling.

“We truly regret” what happened, Hanna Martin said.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Education & Technology & Vocational Training on Facebook, the matter is under active investigation and will result in swift and appropriate action.

It notes “the use of corporal punishment on school campuses is governed by the Safe Schools Protocol Manual and may only be administered under strict guidelines.”
