CANADA – Canada is moving to reduce its economic reliance on the United States and strengthen ties with Europe.

Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the plan Tuesday as Canada imposed retaliatory tariffs on about $20 billion worth of U.S. goods.

Carney says decades of economic integration have left Canada too dependent on its southern neighbor.

His government is now exploring a deeper relationship with the European Union potentially through expanded trade agreements, a new treaty, or other forms of cooperation.
