NASSAU , BAHAMAS – Women continue to make their mark in the energy sector, with Bahamian engineers Aimee Rolle and Sonia Brown recognized with Women in Energy Awards during Diplomatic Week.

The awards, presented by Minister of Energy Jobeth Coleby-Davis and the Government of Canada, highlight the women’s contributions to a field that continues to need greater female representation.

Canadian High Commissioner to The Bahamas Mark Berman says he hopes the recognition will inspire more women to pursue careers in energy.

“Hopefully, we can encourage more women to get into these sectors because it’s amazing. It’s women in energy, it’s women with energy, and it really is a fantastic opportunity.”

For the recipients, the awards were not only a moment of personal pride but also an opportunity to help other women see themselves in the profession.

“Lost for words. I truly appreciate this. I’m definitely going to take this with me and be able to encourage other females.”

Sonia Brown – Women in Energy Award Recipient

“I’m looking to see who I can bring along with me.”

Brown says she also hopes to see more young people enter the profession.

“More young people to get into the profession. It’s a fantastic profession. It requires a lot of rigour, but you won’t regret a day.”

Rolle serves as project manager for Bahamas Energy and Solar Supplies Limited, while Brown is the principal of Graphite Engineering. Both women say they want to see more young people consider careers in the field.

But with women still underrepresented across the energy sector, Minister Coleby-Davis left the room with a challenge.

“To every leader here today, the most powerful thing you can do is not to encourage a woman; it is to recommend her.”
