NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Chief Clerk David Forbes remembers when Don Saunders first came in as deputy speaker in the House of Assembly.

He says they’ve always enjoyed a harmonious and friendly working relationship.

Saunders was elected Member of Parliament for Tall Pines in the 2017 General Election.

He was appointed deputy house speaker shortly after. Forbes says what made him different from speakers and deputy speakers of the past was in legal background.

Upon coming to office, Forbes revealed Saunders and his superior Halson Moultrie were instrumental in producing a bill for an act to provide for the independence of Parliament and while there wasn’t much movement under the former administration, the bill was passed a few months ago.

Forbes says even after he left office, Saunders would still frequent his office for legal reasons and share his interest for parliamentary procedures.

He says he was in disbelief when he got the tragic news of the killing.
