NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Hurricane Dorian had a major impact on hundreds of people in Grand Bahama and Abaco, but it also tested several institutions called on to protect Bahamians and residents in times of crisis.

Ahead of the upcoming Atlantic hurricane season, our Sasha Lightbourne explains how the monster storm caused the Royal Bahamas Defence Force to adapt.

Hurricane Dorian brought unprecedented devastation to Grand Bahama and Abaco in September 2019.

The preparation and resources of several protective arms of government, including the Royal Bahamas Defence Force, were tested. Nearly three years later, RBDF Commodore Raymond King says new strategies have been developed and implemented.

King says the defence force also has access to heavy-duty equipment donated to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) by the United States after Dorian.

And it goes even further, Dr. King explains a significant change to one of the force’s units.

The hurricane season runs from June 1st to November 30th.
