CONGO – Violence has erupted in eastern Congo as Rwanda-backed M23 rebels claimed control of Goma, in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The rebels have reportedly seized control of the airport and attacked several embassies, leading to widespread violence, looting, and protests. Hospitals are overwhelmed, and gender-based violence is on the rise, with bodies being found in the streets.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has spoken with the DRC President, urging civilian protection and commitment to an ongoing peace process.
