Convicted Friend Killer Loses Last-ditch Effort to Have Appeal Reopened

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A woman convicted of killing a former friend in a row over a broken phone has lost a last-ditch effort to have her appeal reopened.

Dervinique Edwards was among five women who ganged 19-year-old Breanna Mackey, who was fatally stabbed on January 25, 2018.

She was convicted of murder following a trial and sentenced to 28 years in prison in 2021.

The Court of Appeal upheld her conviction and sentence, and the Privy Council refused to hear her appeal in 2022.

Although the Privy Council is the country’s highest appellate court, Public Defender Marianne Cadet asked the Court of Appeal to hear new arguments in hopes of overturning the conviction.

But the local appellate justices saw no reason to revisit their previous decision, noting that a higher court had found no miscarriage of justice had occurred in her case.
